Disney Hits Second-Straight Thanksgiving Weekend Disappointment As Wish Box Office Underwhelm

Wish has delivered Disney its second consecutive poor Thanksgiving. The new animated film, which serves as the origin narrative for the company's distinctive wishing star, will be the only animated film published by Walt Disney Animation Studios in 2023 to commemorate the company's centennial.

However, the company has had a surprising string of failures this year, including Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull losing approximately $100 million,

The Haunted Mansion failing to recoup its $150 million budget, and The Marvels grossing the lowest opening weekend of the entire Marvel Cinematic Universe.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the Wish box office continues Disney's poor 2023 trend. It is presently expected to make between $32 and $33 million over the course of five days.

It is still too early to know if it will grab second place for the weekend over Ridley Scott's Napoleon, but this revenue falls far short of the original $45-$50 million estimates.

It also marks Disney's second poor Thanksgiving in a row, following the failure of Strange World in theaters in 2022.Not every Disney film released in 2023 was a colossal flop.

Indeed, their MCU adventure Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 performed admirably, grossing $845.5 million worldwide.

Elemental, a Pixar film, also more than doubled its $200 million production budget. However, with the Wish release underperforming at the box office and demonstrating that even a Disney classic like a princess musical can falter, Disney will need a good 2024 to make up for this year's losses.
