‘John Wick’ Dethrones ‘Avengers: Endgame’ at Box Office Opening at $57M

Thanks to a retired hitman, Avengers: Endgame's three weekends at the top of the domestic box office have come to an end.

John Wick: Chapter Three — Parabellum from Lionsgate had an incredible opening weekend, grossing $57.2 million in the United States in 3,850 cinemas, surpassing Endgame's $29.4 million domestic total.

The opening weekends of the first two entries in the franchise, John Wick ($14.4 million) in 2014 and John Wick: Chapter 2 ($30.4 million) in 2017, were surpassed by Parabellum's higher-than-expected bow.

In Parabellum, Keanu Reeves makes a comeback as a hitman who was once retired but now finds himself without the protection of a mysterious international guild of assassins.

Now stuck with a $14 million bounty on his head, Wick has to battle his way through New York's streets while being pursued by some of the most vicious assassins in the world.

Halle Berry and Anjelica Huston, newcomers to the franchise, participate in the battle.

Again directing the well-reviewed action-thriller was stuntman-turned-director Chad Stahelski. With an A- CinemaScore, 73 on Metacritic, and an 88 percent freshness rating on Rotten Tomatoes, the film is now rated highly.

With a 64–36 percent gender split, the crowd was predominately male, with 65 percent of attendees under 35 and 60 percent between the ages of 18 and 34.
