Shakira Avoids Jail Time With Tax Fraud Settlement

Shakira will not be in jail anytime soon because her tax fraud case has been settled.

According to The Guardian, the "Waka Waka" singer was charged with tax evasion in 2018 after an inquiry revealed that she avoided paying $13 million in taxes. 

Prosecutors claimed Shakira pretended to be in the Bahamas from 2012 to 2014, but was actually in Spain.

Shakira has denied any involvement in the allegations since they were made public, according to E! News.

According to the outlet, when Shakira learned of the suspected tax evasion, she coughed up the money and paid them back. 

Despite the fact that the performer paid back her debts, the matter was proceeded with a trial in 2021 after a court found there was "sufficient evidence of criminality," according to AP News. 

With the matter proceeding to trial, Shakira faced the prospect of prison time. 

According to NPR, prosecutors were seeking an eight-year prison sentence as well as a fine for the musician.

Shakira was fortunate to avoid jail time after appearing in court.
