The Most Expensive Whisky Ever Auctioned

From Glenfiddich to The Macallan, we look at the most costly whisky sold at auction.

On November 18, 2023, the world of whisky collecting took another huge leap into the stratosphere when a single bottle sold for $2.7 million at a Sotheby's auction.

A bottle of The Macallan Fine & Rare 1926 shattered its pre-auction estimate by more than $1 million to become the most expensive bottle of Scotch whisky ever sold at auction, breaking the previous record by $800,000.

Consider that just over a decade ago, the most expensive whisky was under $100,000, and you can see how far whisky collecting has progressed. What's the reason?

There are no shortcuts, and supply has yet to keep up with the unprecedented surge in demand from HNWIs.

In compiling this list of the ten most expensive whiskies ever sold at auction, we considered not just single bottles but also unique collections.

When it comes to single bottles, however, it comes as no surprise that The Macallan reigns supreme.

The Speyside distillery has long dominated not only price tags but also age declarations, with master whisky producer Kirsteen Campell releasing an 81-year-old Scotch (the world's oldest) in 2021.
